As soon as I saw the Reaper design for Overwatch, I fell in love and knew I needed to make this a future cosplay. I had plans set for the later part of 2015 and beginning of 2016 so I tried really hard for a while to refrain from starting this cosplay but the more I looked at the design, the more I wanted to cosplay it. SO I GAVE IIINNNN. And I’m so happy I did because this has definitely become my most favorite cosplay to date. Everything was made from scratch, aside from the mask cast which I got from Henchmen Props & Cosplay! My cosplay was based off of a mashup of the Overwatch official design and the rad Female Reaper fan art by Monorirogue. The main materials used were stretch pleather, black worbla, craft foam, EVA foam and pink insulation foam. Construction time was about a month and a half-two monthsish.
First, Jordan of Henchmen Props & Cosplay offers an amazing Reaper mask and mask cast in his Etsy shop. It’s so well done, I had to get a cast for myself. I cleaned it up, primed and painted it to what you’ll see in the photos below.
Second, my buddy DJ who goes by Jechts, he let me sand all my foam parts in his garage, also letting me use his belt sander which was super nice of him because I wouldn’t have been able to get all that sanding done on my tiny patio haha.
Fourth, my buddy Alex, or Yeti Cosplay, was generous enough to offer his magical sticker and stencil making abilities which I used on my shotguns! The text found on each shotgun was made by him.
Fouth.5, Alex and my friend Matt helped me prime some of my armor which was a great help to me while I was off in the other room sewing up a storm on that cloak!
Fifth, my family for getting me an airbrush machine which made painting a breeze and the final product so clean and pretty. I LOVE AIRBRUSHES! They also got me gift cards for Christmas which helped pay for this costume!
Sixth, all my wonder friends that I stayed with at Katsucon! So my guns were a total bitch to hold and I’m really thankful that I had a handful of great friends that were willing to help me hold them, adjust my belts and hood when they were misplaced and to help me get out of my costume at the end of day 2 because I was about to pass out! Alicia, Jobie, June, Jess, Tyler, Nikkie, I love you guys!
And finally, my amazing fiance Robert who supported me through the entire construction process by driving me around, doing supply runs for me, feeding me, taking care of me when I got super super sick during crucial crafting time and base painting the shotgun shells for me while I again, was sewing in the other room lol. I am so thankful for him. :’DD
So about Katuscon – this was my first east coast con! Really, the first time I’ve ever left the west coast so it was quite an adventure. I had so much fun hanging out with friends, making new ones and seeing all the insanely amazing costumes people bring to Katsucon. So much A GAME! The only thing that sucked was the now infamous tiny fire that forced the entire convention outside in 2 degree weather. I’ll tell you what………. that was terrible lol. BUT I’m definitely making this a yearly thing, it’s a really beautiful convention and 100% worth the trip!
At Katsucon, my Reaper got featured on Kotaku! You can read the article here and check out a ton of other amazing cosplays. <3
